Corby

David J Harland

I have enjoyed a successful 18-year corporate career.

In 1997 I established a business consulting practice providing services to both the private and public sectors, and in 2000 established a software business.

I have been an local education authority appointed school governor, chaired the Kettering and Corby policing area Independent Advisory Group for four years, was a member of the Northants Police stop and search working group, and a charity trustee.

Keith Hudson

As an ex-Councillor I used to sit on some NHS groups. I am a member of the patient participation group (PPG) at Oakley Medical Centre; a member of the Royal British Legion and I help support our local Lions group. I ran the transport gala in East Carlton Park for 22 years; the money raised went to local charities. I am the chairman and welfare officer of the Northamptonshire branch of the Grenadier Guards Association.

I would not be here today if it was not for the NHS.

Jayne Smith

My name is Jayne Smith. I was born in Corby, and I have lived here since 1986. I am a widow, with a daughter and two granddaughters. Voluntary work has appealed to me since I was 16,and I have undertaken various roles in this sector, most recently, I am a volunteer at Corby library, and a RVS Steward volunteer at the local Covid vaccination centre. KGH is my local hospital, and as a Governor, I would like to represent the people of Corby, who, like me, turns to it at our hour of need. At these difficult times, we expect our hospital to care for us in the most effective and efficient way it can, We are all only too aware of the huge fiscal and other pressures KGH is under, but I believe we need to do, and to be seen to be doing, the very best we can, not just for the patients, but for EVERYONE, who in their own way, is helping to achieve this. I would consider it a privilege to be a KGH Governor, and to play my part in this.

Christopher York

Image of Christopher York Governor representing Corby I have lived in Weldon for the past 5 years having moved from Peterborough, where I was a deputy lead governor representing Peterborough on the CPFT (Cambridgeshire & Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust). My roles included mentoring new governors, helping to establish local support groups, and working as part of a team to constantly look at ways to improve on existing structures. I believe in the value of training and embedding new governors to make them fully effective in these important roles. Prior to moving to Weldon, I was chair of my local Parish council and have a thorough understanding of local government and forging working partnerships. I trained as a volunteer youth worker for Peterborough City Council which involved working with the Police and other agencies and also as a local authority school governor. I enjoy working as part of a team to help achieve successful outcomes. In my personal life, I work in digital media &marketing and have various skillsets which I believe would make me an effective governor on the KGHNHS Foundation Trust.

East Northants

Simon Baylis - Lead Governor

I am a trainer and HR business consultant with over 20 years’ experience. I have worked as an advisor and assessor for Investors in People for over 20 years.

Currently sit on the patient participation group (PPG) at my local GP surgery, I have also delivered some training to their team. Previous committee work includes residents' committees and school governorship. My professional work has been in both the public and private sectors focusing on coaching, core values, recruitment, interviewing, leadership, appraisal, absence management and project management. I also have experience in running a networking group, managing graduate recruitment and the design and delivery of away days for organisations.

I became a Public Governor of Kettering General Hospital in 2022 and have become increasingly engaged in supporting the Non-executive Directors in the ongoing drive to improve our health service. And elected as Lead Governor, at Council of Governors’ meeting on 6 December 2023.

My focus is particularly on people - addressing the need to both recruit and retain good staff at all levels. I am also passionate about the trust's values.

I am looking forward to continuing to work with fellow governors acting as critical friends of the trust, holding the senior team to account, and representing the views of staff and patients.

Peter Blades

I care about the NHS and will work hard to promote users' concerns; needs are identified and met. I have lived in the area served by Kettering Hospital all my life and have reasons to be grateful for the care it has provided over the years. The NHS is under severe pressure to deliver quality care within ever demanding budgets. The advances in medical care and needs are continually developing and it is important that users are represented and heard.

I can contribute to this process taking a no-nonsense approach to all facets of the hospital’s operations and future. My working career started on the shop floor in mechanical engineering and having worked my way up via college and university through levels of management, reaching director level and becoming part owner of the company I worked for. I served on Works and Safety committees and was a company pension scheme trustee. I travelled extensively all over the world visiting customers and negotiating sales contracts and being heavily involved in design and production matters. I left the company some 19 years ago to pursue my interests in farming, forestry, and wildlife conservation.

My experience in management and committee work enables me to cut through the weasel words and get down to the important nitty gritty of what is happening and holding the non-executive directors to account.

Max D'Souza

I’ve been happily living in Irthlingborough with my partner for the last 3 years. My professional vocation is in project and people management, to which I am credited with a BSc, MSc and various associated qualifications. Peoples’ wellbeing and community are chief amongst my core values, and I would like to think I contribute a little each day towards this belief.

As a senior manager, I comprehend the importance of upholding a content workforce and ensuring corporate processes remain efficient and effective. I have always been passionately interested in healthcare and the NHS, during my earlier years I frequently engaged in fundraisers and Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) assessments as an active member of the Cambridgeshire NHS trust. I progressed my interests further by enlisting in the Territorial Army and serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps and the Adjutant General's Corp (AGC). My devotion to the NHS and health services continues to date, as I’m proud to be a weekend ‘red shirt’ (volunteer) at KGH.

On a personal note, the help and support the NHS gave me when my father had a heart attack, spurred me on to do more for our beloved NHS. I believe the several valuable skills I have acquired throughout my professions combine well with my lived-in experience in the medical field. Thus, I am looking forward to the opportunity to utilise these attributes as a governor within the trust.

I am a local resident with a PhD in Health Services Management from the University of Birmingham and work experience in local government and health commissioning sectors.

I currently work as a Transformation Manager for Children and Young People at Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board.

Kettering

Pauline Brand

During a long career in nursing, I witnessed and was involved in many changes to the NHS. I remain a passionate supporter of the NHS and am mindful of the magnitude of challenges facing the organisation and thereby the KGH Trust today.

My professional career together with the personal experience of caring for family members with chronic diseases and of being a patient, has given me a unique insight into the patient experience from both a professional and lay viewpoint. At times it can be difficult for those going through an illness to navigate the services on offer. I feel it is imperative that the voices of patients and their families remain central to the care they are offered. Together with these beliefs I will bring my skills of leadership, management and team working to the role of public governor.

I am a reliable, committed team player who adopts a can-do approach to any situation. I am not afraid to ask difficult questions, offer constructive criticism and advocate for patients. My goal is to make the patient experience at KGH the best it can be. At a time when the NHS is experiencing massive demands on its services, I would deem it a privilege to serve as a public governor for KGH. I have the necessary skills and experience to undertake this role and will do my utmost to act as an advocate for KGH patients, staff, and the wider stakeholders in Kettering.

Penny Owens

As a public governor I will contribute 45 years of clinical front-line NHS experience along with the passion and drive to help ensure the highest-possible standard of patient care.

A radiographer by background, my final full-time position was as Director of Allied Health Professionals for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, overseeing 43 different clinical disciplines. Having originally delayed my retirement at the onset of the pandemic, I eventually left full-time work in September 2021.

When as Chief Radiographer for South Derbyshire I developed and promoted "The Mummy Test" across all Trust sites, a highly effective clinical standard whereby every patient should be afforded the same high-quality care, attention and treatment that would be due to one's own mother. This remains my abiding philosophy to this day, and I continue to apply it in my current roles as a national inspector for the Care Quality Commission and for the UK agency overseeing standards in Diagnostic Imaging (UKAS).

I have served as a member of the NHS National Assembly since spring 2019, and was awarded a Fellowship by the College of Radiographers in 2021. I hold a Master's Degree in Public Sector Management.

As a cancer survivor I understand only too well the importance of quality of care throughout the patient journey, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to help ensure a safe, compassionate experience for our family and friends who may find themselves in need of healthcare services across the Borough.

Dr Anup Pandey

I've proudly served as a Governor at our Kettering General Hospital (KGH) since Nov 2021, and I'm dedicated to continuing this work. I am also an elected Unitary and Town council councillor. I've always prioritised representing our constituents' concerns. Many community members have contacted me about KGH’s services. As a hospital governor, I see my role as a crucial link between the trust and the public. I'm here to ensure your voices are heard, issues are addressed, and the quality of care is constantly monitored and improved. Effective communication are vital for the best healthcare services.

In addition to my community commitment, I bring professional experience as a lecturer in Artificial Intelligence, holding a doctorate in the field. My academic background enhances my research, analysis, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for addressing complex hospital issues.

Kettering is my home, and I reside here with my family. This community's well-being and its residents' health matter deeply to me. I am looking forward to continuing to serve as a public hospital governor. Together, we can maintain our hospital's high standards of care, innovation, and community support. Wendy Savill

I believe the role of a Governor is an esteemed position of trust, one that needs and deserves commitment to carrying out with the aims and objectives of the council of Governors in mind.

My values are honesty, empathy and compassion and this runs through everything I do in daily life whether at work or in my personal life. My values enable me to choose the right path to take and to question anything that I don't understand, this is important to gain knowledge into making those right decisions.

In my working life, I deliver training either online or face to face so I am comfortable in these settings as well as challenging or questioning in areas I don't understand or agree with. I do this in a non-confrontational way ensuring a safe space for all.

Wellingborough

Lindsay Alvis

In 1984, I moved with my family to Grendon, Northamptonshire, within the area covered by Wellingborough Borough Council. In 2004, I moved to Wollaston, Northamptonshire, still within the rural Wellingborough area, and continue to live in Wollaston. Seeking to give something back to the Community, I stood for and was elected to the Wollaston Parish Council in 2004. I am still a Parish Councillor and have held the position of Chair since May 2019.

I retired in 2020, following 10 years with the Barclays Banking Group. During that time, I spent five years managing fraud risks to Barclaycard customers. My career was principally in sales, marketing and management, working in the retail and commercial sectors. My work experience led me to attain leadership and interpersonal skills, developing empathy and understanding in relationships with customers and colleagues. This engendered confidence, trust and good will, and established sound and successful relationships.

I am an enthusiastic and confident person and an effective communicator, with all who I happen to be conversing with. I will always listen to anyone’s opinion, and whether I agree with them or not, can discuss my own view, in a sensitive and well-reasoned manner. I will always consider a point of view, even when I disagree with it, but I will also be happy to reconsider my opinion, if the point being made is reasonable and to the benefit of all.

Graham Lawman

I have lived in Wellingborough, where I am Borough Councillor for Rixon Ward & County Councillor for Croyland & Swanspool Division, since 2001 and am a very active, committed Community Champion. I now hope to contribute, as Wellingborough’s voice, to KGH, which I believe in passionately and whose improvement journey I want to help.

I am a regular visitor to KGH, Isebrook & Nene Park as a volunteer medical driver, also assisting attendees to access many wards and departments, so I see much of the site and experience patients’ views, but, am keen to represent all users.

I am keen that the disadvantaged live better lives, patients to return to their communities promptly and to see improvements for all patients in getting quality treatment at the earliest opportunity.

At NCC, I am Chairman of the £2.2bn Pensions fund, Finance Scrutiny Vice-Chairman and a former Assistant Cabinet Member, Finance, so well used to dealing with large sums and organisations and bring finance & IT skills to the hospital as well as knowledge about partner organisations to improve understanding and partnership.

For the Borough, I am a past Mayor and current Services Committee Chairman, with community and health responsibility, as well as having held other posts. My promotion of partnership working led to being in the ‘leading lights’ cadre of Councillors.

Terry Spencer

I was born in Wellingborough and lived here for much of my life and have witnessed the growth of health services in the borough from The cottage hospital/St John’s ambulance days to the present NHS situation.

I have been a Member of the Royal Society for Public Health for over fifty years and a Director of the Radon Council.

As a past lecturer on building subjects and the managing director of a local building company for the past fifty years I have a keen interest on effects of the housing environment on general health, particularly on the health and wellbeing of the elderly and their effects on the NHS performance and availability.

West Northamptonshire

Rashmi Shah

I am a health and social care service user as I am disabled blind and use a guide dog to get about. I have experience of being a carer when my mother developed dementia in her later years. I like being involved with Kettering General Hospital so that I can influence and enhance the understanding of the needs of the Black and Minority Ethnic community and disabled people generally.

As a governor I have been observing the policies, the services and making suggestions to help improvements for patients. I am a member of Northamptonshire Black Community Together, being active in building up strategic partnerships, enabling reaching out to the community, including the delivery and accessing services. I have been very active in attending Council of Governors meetings and Committee meetings. As a member of Integrated Care Northamptonshire, Patient Advisory Group, it gives me the opportunity to help transform lives by advising work programmes including, Ageing Well, Urgent and Elective Care and the Dementia and Carer strategy, including End of Life Care.

As a governor, I will focus on continuing with the progress of understanding the needs of the Black and Minority Ethnic Community as well as disabled people at large with the aim of increasing services for the people I represent. I am a member of the NHS National Outpatient Transformation Programme - influencing and shaping services for Black and Minority Ethnic community as well as disabled people.

Roseann Shanks

I am a retired dentist and I worked in the NHS from 1977 until 2006. I worked first in the Community Dental Service, then as an Senior House Officer at Guy's Dental Hospital and finally in general practice (I was also a commissioned officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps Reserve). I owned and managed my own dental practice in Bedford from1993 until 2017, and have experience of both NHS and private dentistry. I have experience of dealing with patients, healthcare regulation and managing staff. In addition, I have had substantial experience of healthcare procurement as well as the financial aspects of a healthcare business. The NHS is a vitally important organisation within the UK. Even in retirement, I believe that I can contribute to its success (and in particular to the success of Kettering General Hospital). I would hope that my experience both in and out of the NHS (my practice was wholly private during my last decade) will assist in this.

Staff Governors

Esther Ayodele

As an elected staff governor, I have a very strong interest in always representing the 'staff viewpoint'. To equip myself for this role I have developed appropriate leadership skills over time and my current job role enables me to interact with different colleagues on wards. Likewise, patients. I will be able to represent the interest of colleagues working with different teams as needed to implement actions.

Also, I am very approachable, friendly, enthusiastic about change and will be committed to representing colleagues' views including the general community and, also have complex negotiations to implement process change as needed. Ensuring to be objective, not confrontational when asking questions or clarifying ideas, and expand my horizon by being updated and cascading down knowledge to colleagues. I will also be willing to give time to read relevant documents, papers, attend meetings and trainings provided by the trust.

I am certain that in being a staff governor I will work effectively with others and fellow governors in identifying the needs of colleagues, making sure their voices are heard and champion the needs of the community.

Jayne Chambers - Deputy Lead Governor

My career at Kettering General Hospital started in 2007 as a Health Care Assistant, initially on Harrowden A ward and then onto MAU. After a short break away I returned to Kettering General in 2013 and have been Capacity Co-ordinator, Discharge Assistant, Service Support Manager, Capital Programmes Operational Delivery Manager, Cancer Services Manager and today Head of Strategic Corporate and Community Fundraising.

My motto is “my hospital serving my community and my family, working alongside dedicated teams”. I want this hospital to be the best it can be and therefore I will do my utmost to ensure that it will be.

Cath Chisolm

As a member of staff for 10 years and being passionate about Kettering General Hospital (KGH) and the services provided for the community and it’s staff, I represent their voices as a staff governor.

My pledge is that I want to make sure that all staff are given the opportunities and support needed to reach their full potential. That they feel safe and happy during their time as part of the KGH family. Although I have no previous experience as a governor, I will enjoy the challenge of the development and learning without compromising; I am there to serve. I want the very best for staff, their careers which will ultimately have a positive impact patients’ experience. I’m not shy in asking the difficult questions and I can speak out and up for what is important.

I’m always happy to have a chat and am visible in the Trust so if you see me around and want to ask, or tell me anything, please do. I bring a lot of experience in change, people management and transformation. I am proud to be a governor at KGH.

Charlotte Cooper (nee Smith)

I started working in the NHS as an apprentice when I was 18 years old; and so far on my journey I have been in roles that have given me the courage to learn about different aspects of working within NHS organisations, as well as listen to other people's experiences and respecting differences to myself.

Working in a diverse organisation has allowed me to be more balanced, after completing my first term as a staff governor, (now in my second term), I have begun to put ideas forward, whilst being mindful of taking others along on the journey with me. I will continue to hold myself accountable for ensuring that the voice of those who work in the organisation are heard, and to advocate for ensuring that KGH is a safe, inclusive and compassionate place to work so that we can ensure the best care for our patients and the wider community.

Mike Corcoran

As your Lead Chaplain here at KGH, I have the privilege of heading up a dedicated and compassionate support service that has daily contact with our patients, their families and our hard-working staff and volunteers. This position helps me to see the care provided at KGH from the viewpoint of those directly affected by our services - whether they are receiving treatment, delivering care on our wards and clinics or involved in providing the much-needed support that enables our hospital to run smoothly and safely. I believe this perspective will help my role as a staff governor, guaranteeing that the voices of patients, families and staff are heard when strategic decisions are being made.

I joined the KGH family 2 years ago having worked with the NHS in Manchester for 2 ½ years. Prior to becoming a CofE minister, I was employed for many years in the public sector, so I understand some of the financial and operational pressures large organisations face and the concerns of those committed to public service. I also recognise that faith and belief are still important to many people, especially in times of difficulty and crisis. Since its foundation in 1948, the NHS has always acknowledged the importance of holistic care for those in need. As one of your staff governors I will bring my skills, experience and enthusiasm to enable KGH to continue to deliver quality care services that are accessible and inclusive, ensuring the well-being and welfare of the communities we serve.

Cleanlove Kpogo

I believe that the role of a governor is fundamental to ensuring that KGH is properly governed to meet the needs of the population including colleagues hence would like to volunteer my time, experience, and skills to represent colleagues as a staff governor.

I’m a nurse with eight years' experience that spans from academia, ward management, union work and direct clinical patient care. In addition to my experience, I bring on board my youth, enthusiasm, and analytical approach to problem solving.

One of the key principles is for governors to seek the views of members and the public on material issues or changes being discussed by the trust. Being approachable, a good listener with good communication skills makes me suitable for this position. As a governor I aim to represent my constituency by ensuring: the needs of colleagues, patients and the local community are addressed and well communicated to achieve the intended outcomes. Finally, KGH have successfully recruited many internationally trained staff across both nursing and medicine. Having been an international recruit myself, I am of the firm belief that my experience can help shape the future of our workforce at KGH.

Bhekubuhle (Bheku) Ncube

I am currently working as a Registered Nurse at KGH. As a governor I intend to bring the same level of commitment and dedication I possess towards my role as a nurse. I bring a wealth of expertise, gained over the years working in Africa as a nurse, but also because of the diversity.

I am a dedicated, highly motivated and hardworking individual. The trust has been widely recruiting from diverse backgrounds and cultures; I will help the trust understand, appreciate and harness the diversity of culture and of experience for the benefit of all and sundry.

Lastly, being a staff governor will afford me the opportunity to give back to the community that welcomed me with open and loving arms, as I come from a different continent. I now feel I am part of the trust family and as a family member I want to play my part for the benefit of the trust and the general public.

Dr Toral Sengar

I am honoured to continue serving as your staff governor at KGH. Having served as an Anaesthetist for over two decades since 2000, with the last 12 years devoted to KGH, I have witnessed the nuances and challenges of our healthcare system. My experience has ingrained in me a deep commitment to improving healthcare for our staff and patients.

Since November 2021, I've had the privilege of representing as a staff governor at KGH. During this tenure, I actively participated in various committees and effectively conveyed concerns within the Council of Governors. I consider this role a sacred responsibility and promise to advocate for our hardworking staff. In addition to my extensive clinical experience, I have recently completed my Health MBA from the University of Nottingham. This academic journey has equipped me with valuable insights into the workings of the NHS. Armed with this knowledge, I am prepared to address pressing issues such as staff shortages and the implementation of policies that promote work-life balance and professional development.

My dedication to amplifying the voices of our staff members is unwavering. I pledge to work tirelessly to ensure that concerns are heard and acted upon effectively. Together, we can continue to elevate our healthcare community, making KGH an even better place to work and receive care.

I am a retired registered General Nurse with vast experience in nursing and management.

I have a particular interest in bringing quality care into the workplace. I trained at Kettering General Hospital where I held a series of senior roles before moving to South Wales where I obtained a degree to teach nursing. I have held a number of positions including Lead Nurse Education Independent Sector; Investigator of complaints in the health service and Investors in People Advisor.

I undertake a lot of voluntary work including work with the Samaritans, Healthwatch: 15 steps challenge at Kettering General Hospital as well as being a patient representative

I am very pleased to be involved in the governance of Kettering General Hospital Foundation Trust at this time as it continues to make progress on caring for older people. For someone who is frail, vulnerable or has a dementia, who may be on the edge of his or her limits of coping at home in a familiar environment, and who is seeing the same people and doing the same things each day, the effect of going into hospital can be overwhelming.

Small considerations in how care is delivered can help to create a more positive hospital experience for individuals and for older people it is important that their care is shaped not just by their illness or frailty but also by the wider context of their life and relationships.

Sue has led a team of health and social care professionals working alongside community volunteers, to deliver a national Falls project and developed a successful relationship with a commercial healthcare provider which resulted in a substantial contract for Age UK Northamptonshire.
