New KGH procedure to reduce lung cancer distress

Kettering General Hospital has launched a new procedure which can provide quick relief for breathless lung cancer patients without the need for a major operation.

The procedure – normally only done at a handful of specialist national centres – uses electricity to cut a tumour into pieces through a bronchoscope – a kind of tube inserted into the lungs which contains a camera and light

It will mean patients do not have to travel so far for treatment and provide an alternative for individuals who are not suitable for major surgery.

Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, Dr George Tsaknis, performed the procedure for the first time at KGH with the assistance of Endoscopy Staff Nurse, Jayne Haycock, on November 18, 2019.
